Before deciding to go fishing in either freshwater or saltwater systems a fishing license is required in a majority of cases. In Victoria Australia, a fishing license is quite cheap and can be bought without having to sit a test.
A fishing license can be bought from VFA (Victorian Fisheries Authority) online for your convenience. Licenses can also be bought for various durations including:
- 3 days ($10 AUD)
- 28 days ($21.20 AUD)
- 1 year ($34.95 AUD)
- 3 years ($95.40 AUD)
Shorter license durations are great for beginners or tourists to get a taste of Victorian fishing. While lengthy durations are great for hobbyists who go fishing more often. Longer duration licenses also provide for some great savings.
Not everyone does require a fishing license. If you’re under the age of 18 or over 70 years old a license won’t be required and you can fish as much as you want. Happy days.
Where do the funds go from our fishing license?
One of the great things about purchasing a fishing license is that the funds go back into programs and initiatives to improve fishing in Victorian waterways.
These funds help to improve and maintain infrastructure including jetties, boat ramps, and establishment of new reefs. Also, funding for fish stocking in both freshwater and marine systems.

Thanks for the information on fishing and how to do it legally! The cost for a fishing license is very reasonable and much better than getting into trouble with the law for noncompliance. I see that the license can be purchased online, but can it also be purchased locally? And if you do purchase online, do you need to wait for a physical license to be mailed, or can you start fishing immediately with the online license?
A Victorian fishing licence can be bought locally from any of these fishing licence outlets listed here. Also, an online bought fishing licence allows you to start fishing straight away as a PDF version will be sent to your email. Hope this helps! 🙂
