How to make Panko pan fried fish fillets

Panko breadcrumbed fish fillets are one of the easiest recipes to make and can be served with a side of salad and Kewpie mayonnaise for a good feed. Approximately, preparation and cooking time of 15 minutes if we’re not taking gutting and cleaning of the fish into consideration.

In this post today I’ll be using a freshly caught and filleted flathead and I’ll explain in short and simple steps how I go about using Panko breadcrumbs.

What you’ll need?

Fish Fillets or Fish Strips

Panko Bread Crumbs

Flour (Either wholemeal or plain)

Egg/s

Olive Oil

The order of operation – FEB

The most critical part of using Panko breadcrumbs, in my opinion, is getting the order correct on how we prepare our fillets. To get a nice and crunchy outer layer I like to use the sequence of coating the fillets in flour, egg and then Panko Breadcrumbs. This can be easily remembered through the acronym – FEB!

Step 1 – Heat up oil on medium heat.

Before we begin preparing our Fish fillets to get the frying pan going we’ll heat up the olive oil on medium heat.

Step 2 – Coat fillets through the flour. (F)

The first step in preparing our fillets is to coat the fillets through the flour. I like to use wholemeal flour but plain white flour will work just as well. Ensure the whole fillet is well coated before proceeding to the next step.

Step 3 – Coat fillets through beaten eggs. (E)

Once fillets have been coated with flour we’ll then coat through the beaten eggs.

Step 4 – Coat fillets through Panko Breadcrumbs. (B)

Panko time! Take the fillets out of the eggs and place it through a bowl of panko bread crumbs. Ensure the fillets are well covered.

Step 5 – Fry fillets on the pan.

By the time the fillets are prepared our frying pan should be ready to go. Place the fillets into the oil and cook approximately 2 minutes on each side or until a nice golden brown is achieved.

Serve and enjoy!

As simple as that! Our fillets are ready to be served with a squeeze of lime. If you like, prepare a side of salad of your choice to go with the Panko fried fish fillets. My absolute recommendation, serve fish fillets with Kewpie mayo. What I like to call ‘secret sauce’.

  4. That looks really smashing! reminds me of when my father used to take me fishing krill! breadcrumbed fish
fillets with mayo…just lovely! Can’t wait to try this! Unfortunately, it was only possible since he had a boat we could go out with, I don’t have one… Is it possible to fish this without a boat?
I always wanted to learn fishing but I never had anyone to go with on land, It has always seemed like such a nice way to spend time. What fishes could I get with this equipment? Can it be used in all waters? Is it difficult to learn?

    1. Hi Bernie,

Thanks for taking the time and leaving a comment! To answer your first question, absolutely you can catch Flathead from the land. My website is all about land based fishing.

As for the fishing equipment check out my guide on rod and reels to get you started. However, fishing can’t be done in all waters and therefore you need to check with local regulations where you’re allowed to fish.

In my opinion, fishing is a great way to spend an afternoon on the water. It’s quite relaxing yet exciting at the same time and almost anyone can learn how to begin fishing.

  5. That’s a nice and straightforward way to do it Vinnie!
Plus, all you need to make it can be pretty easily packed and taken with you if you are camping out by your spot. Wouldn’t be bad to have some panko crumbed fillets from a fresh catch after a long days fishing 🙂
