Crispy fried calamari served with smashed avocado

Nothing beats freshly caught squid fried to a crispy brown outer layer and served on a bed of smashed avocado. This is my take on Jamie Olivers recipe from his 5 ingredients cookbook.

If you guys are looking for a conveniently delicious meal to prepare and make then have an attempt at this recipe. Approximately 20 minutes of preparation/cooking time and with the use of only 5 ingredients. Any amatuer cook like my self can’t go wrong.

What you’ll need?

250g Squid (Gutted and cleaned)

2 heaped TBSP whole meal flour

1 Ripe Avocado

2 Limes

2 TSP Hot chilli sauce

Step 1 – Begin by slicing squid tubes into approx 1cm rings.

Firstly, we’ll begin by taking the clean and gutted squid tubes and slicing into 1cm width rings.

Step 2 – Coat squid rings with flour and season with a pinch of salt and black pepper.

Once the squid tubes have been sliced into rings. Begin coating the rings with wholemeal flour, a pinch of sea salt and black pepper. Use your hands and mix well together.

Step 3 – Heat up frying pan to medium heat.

Once the squid rings have been prepared we’ll place our frying pan on medium heat with approximately 1cm of olive oil into the frying pan.

Step 4 – While the pan heats up de-stone avocado halves and mash.

While keeping a close eye on the frying pan we’ll make our avocado mash as the pan heats up. Take the avocado and cut it into halves and destone. Using a tablespoon we’ll scrape all the avocado flesh into a small bowl.

Step 5 – Add in lime zest and juice to avo mash and season.

Before we begin mashing our avocado we’ll scrape in lime zest and squeeze one whole lime juice into the mix. Add in a bit of sea salt and black pepper to taste.

Step 6 – Divide avo mash onto two plates.

Mash the avocado with the use of a fork until a consistent smooth mix is created. Serve and divide avocado mash onto two plates. We’ll place the squid rings onto the mash in later steps.

Step 7 – Begin frying squid rings.

Before we begin we’ll test the oil by placing a piece of squid into the oil. If the squid begins to fry start putting the remaining squid rings onto the pan.

Fry a portion at a time to avoid overfilling the frying pan. Fry squid rings until golden brown on all sides and place cooked squid rings onto a paper towel.

Step 8 – Plate fried squid rings onto avo mash.

Once the squid rings have been fried we’ll plate our rings onto the smashed avocado.

Step 9 – Serve fried squid and avo with hot chili sauce.

Serve squid rings and avo mash with chili sauce and decorate as you please.

Step 10 – Enjoy your now finished crispy squid and smashed avocado.

There you have it! our crispy fried squid and smashed avocado are now ready to be enjoyed with half a lime ready to be squeezed on top.

All thanks to Jamie Olivers 5 ingredients cookbook

This recipe was followed by Jamie Olivers ‘5 Ingredients Quick & easy food’ cookbook. I’ve been really enjoying the simplicity of his book and with the use of only 5 main ingredients, these are a lot easier to attempt for any novice cook like myself.

I’ve attempted a few other recipes from this book including ‘Quick Asian salmon fishcakes‘ and ‘Thai crispy red snapper‘ with a few variations of my own. Feel free to check them out and my review of the book itself here ‘Jamie Olivers – 5 Ingredients book review‘.

All the best with the recipe and if you guys have any questions feel free to leave them in the comments below and I’d be more than happy to help out.

Is the secret to soft calamari to cook it as fresh as possible?

    1. Hi Michel,

I’m not sure if that it is the secret to soft calamari but from experience it’s definitely best to cook seafood fresh as possible. As for the toughness, I think the longer you cook the calamari the tougher and rubbery it becomes. So best to cook it just enough.

All the best and be sure to let me know how you went if you do decide to give this recipe a go 🙂
